The Parliament of New South Wales was the first parliament to be established in Australia.

It was here that responsible government in Australia began in 1856.

Based on the British Westminster system of government, the roles, function and practices of this parliament have evolved over time.

Today, Parliament is where Members of Parliament represent the interests of the people of New South Wales debate and vote on legislation – the laws that govern the state. It scrutinises the work of government and provides a space within which the community can engage and participate in the democratic process.
